Answered on Oct 09, 2023The untreated solid pine of the IVAR side unit can be painted, oiled or stained according to your preference. Some recommended options to achieve a desired look include:
- For a natural, weathered appearance, use a clear wood oil or stain that enhances the grain of the pine.
- For a more uniform, painted finish, use a high-quality interior latex or oil-based paint in your color of choice.
- To create a distressed, vintage look, you can use a chalk-based paint and then lightly sand or distress the surface.
- Gel stains are also a good option as they provide an even, controlled coverage on the pine.
The key is to prepare the surface properly by lightly sanding before applying the finish of your choice. This will ensure the best adhesion and longest-lasting results

Posted on Mar 02, 2023I want to stain my Ivar side unit with a dark wood color. Do you recommend using a specific type of stain or finish for this product, and are there any special instructions for preparing the surface before staining?
Alice @ EasyRebuild
Answered on Mar 04, 2023For the IVAR side unit, I recommend using a wood stain or oil-based semi-transparent stain to achieve a dark wood color. Before staining, lightly sand the surface to create a smooth finish and remove any imperfections or uneven areas. Wipe away any dust with a clean cloth. Apply the stain evenly across the surface using a brush or cloth, following the wood grain. Allow the stain to fully dry as per the manufacturer's instructions, then apply a clear polyurethane or wood sealer to protect the finish. This will help the stain last and prevent wear over time. Take care to work in a well-ventilated area and follow all safety precautions when using stains and sealers
