Posted on Mar 31, 2023I want to frame a picture that is slightly larger than the recommended size. Can I use a different mat or trim the mat to fit my picture? If so, what materials are recommended for this purpose?
Kenzo @ EasyRebuild
Answered on Apr 02, 2023You can definitely use a different mat or trim the mat to fit your picture that is slightly larger than the recommended size. Here are the steps I would recommend:
For a different mat:
- Measure the exact size of your picture and select a mat that is slightly larger than the picture dimensions. Make sure the mat opening is still slightly smaller than the picture size.
- Use an acid-free mat board to ensure it doesn't discolor your picture over time.
- Carefully center and adhere the picture to the mat using archival-quality photo corners or mounting corners.
For trimming the mat:
- Measure the exact size of your picture.
- Use a sharp utility knife and straightedge to carefully trim the mat opening to be slightly larger than the picture size.
- Make sure to measure and cut accurately to avoid damaging the mat.
- Again, use archival-quality materials to mount the picture in the trimmed mat.
The key is to use high-quality, acid-free materials designed for picture framing to protect your artwork. Let me know if you have any other questions

Posted on Mar 28, 2023I'd like to know if it's possible to replace the black mat with a white one or any other color? If so, are there any specific products that can be used as an alternative mat for this frame?
Alice @ EasyRebuild
Answered on Mar 30, 2023The RIBBA frame is designed to accommodate a specific size mat. While it is not possible to directly replace the black mat with a different color, you can purchase a custom-cut mat that fits the frame's dimensions. Some options to consider:
- Visit a local craft or framing store and have them cut a white (or any other color) mat to the exact size of the RIBBA frame's mat opening, which is 15 1/4" x 19 1/4". This will allow you to swap out the mat while still using the original RIBBA frame.
- Check if IKEA offers replacement mats in different colors that are sized to fit the RIBBA frame. They may have compatible mat options available.
- Measure the mat opening carefully and search online for pre-cut mats in the right size. Many framing and art supply stores sell custom mats that could work as a replacement.
The key is finding a mat that matches the RIBBA frame's specific dimensions to ensure a proper fit and finish
